We wrote to ourselves and mailed the letters to our addresses. The children are becoming familiar with aspects of their addresses, such as the numbers, street names, and town names. Some of the skills that we have seen blossoming this week are:
fine motor: folding letters, fitting different sizes of cards into different envelopes, stamping and tracing, and writing alphabet letters and words, putting together alphabet puzzles, and placing stickers and labels in the correct spaces on an envelope.
cognitive skills: learning the different parts of a letter, figuring out the path of a letter from writing it to its final destination, the sequence of things that need to happen before a letter is ready to be "mailed", the role of a mail carrier, and memory skills (address, numbers).
social/emotional skills: giving and receiving mail, writing notes to each other, and taking turns with materials, discovering role playing.
Until Next Time,
Michele
