Winter continued.....

We have continued with winter in the classroom, with a pinata made to look like a snowball, icebergs in the water table (try this at home-freeze water balloons, then peel off the balloon, sprinkle with salt, and drip with colored water. Very cool) The children enjoyed painting sticks with white paint and glitter, printing more snowflake shapes and gluing the colors of winter, and singing their "Peace" song. We wrote a book of winter words after a walk, and, as it was still warm out then, the children noticed "mud" a lot. Our greeting one day was a snowflake made of yarn, which took a lot of patience! We drew on foil that was warmed, and the children described the feeling of skating on ice.

Winter! Just in Time!

Snow! Winter! The children have embraced the weather with gusto. Our artwork reflects the colors of the season, and we've painted snowflake shapes, cut snowflakes out of paper, and painted on glass to make a circular monoprint snowball. Our songs are about animals in winter, as well as the weather and getting dressed for the snow. The block corner is getting a work out as the children learn to construct sturdy structures with the unit blocks, even sturdy enough to stand inside! Musical instruments remain available, and the children play "band". They have a conductor and make music together. When the conductor puts his/her hands down, you're supposed to stop! We made bird feeders (reduce, reuse, recycle) to bring to our homes, because we know that we can help the birds in the winter adapt to the different foods they have to find. Our pinata is decorated, and we'll enjoy it next week.
We go outside whenever we can!

Winter!

We've begun our study of winter, and the snowflakes are falling! The children are exploring through song and story what happens in winter. We're wondering, what do animals do? Our new words are migrate, hibernate, and adapt. We're helping the birds by feeding them in a small feeder outside our window.
The children notice the weather, and can tell us what they notice about the winter. Our paintings have become glittery, and the children are noticing snowflake shapes in everything. We made a polymer in our water table, that resembles snow in many ways except for the temperature! Our buddy Friday was a cooperative activity of taking apart and putting together a "mitten", which is hanging in the window. The children love to point out their piece of the puzzle!
