We continued talking about safety, firefighters, and community helpers in the classroom, and had a wonderful trip to the Fire Station. We painted with fire trucks, made "smoke" paintings, and glued shapes to make a fire truck. Our classroom has been busy with emergent writers and strong block builders!

Some sort of writing happens every day in our PreK 4 classroom; we do not sit the children down and ask them to reproduce letters for us, rather we watch in astonishment as they seek ways to add writing to their everyday play. When we made applesauce, there was a call for a "stop sign" to keep children safe from the hot pot. When we go on a field trip or celebrate in the classroom, we typically produce some sort of thank you note or birthday card which the children all illustrate. The children look at the job chart to find their names, and when we sit down for snack there is also a time of "looking for my name" and we often ask the child "how can you tell it's your name?" There is a writing table in our classroom with a variety of pens and paper, and we have many original books that we've written together.

The block rug is a place of communication and imagination. Fortunately, there always seem to be enough blocks for everyone. Sometimes there just has to be some negotiation. But always it is an active and engaging space.

Our trip to the firehouse was informative and exciting! We met many firefighters, sang a song or two, and most especially climbed on the fire trucks.
Until Next Time,
Michele
