What Can You Learn in a Shoe Store?

For this post I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the shoe store that we have set up in our classroom and the interactions that are happening. Free play is an integral part of our preschool curriculum, and with this "closer look" we can see just what that play involves for your child developmentally. This type of play is called authentic learning, in that we use real life props to encourage the children to engage and interact.

FINE MOTOR SKILLS:
stamping and using the cash register buttons

writing a receipt

stamping and tearing out pages

COGNITION:
measuring and number recognition

matching

organization and comparison skills

geometry (rectangular prism) and number and letter recognition

volume (how many pairs can fit?)

name recognition, left and right directional terms

SOCIAL/LANGUAGE SKILLS:

role playing

conversations on the phone

taking turns, role playing

descriptive language

role playing, taking turns, observing others to learn new skills

self help skills!
We also talked about our five senses this week, and discovered different ways that we use them to decipher our world.

Until Next Time,
Michele
