Bird Week

We have learned about birds in a big way this week! From nest building, to egg shapes and colors, to the names of different birds we've been very excited and engaged in this project. The children enjoy taking the guide books outside to look for birds, and many of them already have favorites-the crow, the chickadee, the cardinal, and the red-winged blackbird to name a few. We have read science books and story books about birds, and had a bird watching walk with "bird lookers" that we made to look through.

 We made a delicious "birds nest" snack-butter, wheat cereal, honey (lots), then added yogurt covered raisins for the eggs.

It was a beautiful day for a birdwatching hike!

I Wonder if I'm Growing?

We found out that yes, we are growing! One of our classmates even lost a tooth! The children were measured, wrote their own books to be read aloud to their peers, and drew pictures of their growing up selves. A favorite book was Peter's Chair  by Ezra Jack Keats; Peter is not ready to grow out of his chair and give it to his baby sister.  Reflecting on ourselves leads to thoughtful conversations and gives us self confidence and strength in our abilities. And it's very interesting! 

The children were able to add comments at the end, with the author choosing the commenters. Raising hands to take a turn was difficult!

The costumes came out again, and there were many different ways to interact. 

 Writing and illustrating a book takes concentration, and it's a way to share your own important interests with everyone.

 Drawing self-portraits is a natural creative process for children to engage in.

 Rosalba helped the children make a mariposa (butterfly) snack that showed the transformation of the butterfly from the caterpillar to the chrysalis to the butterfly, in Spanish. The children loved the process, and the snack was delicious!

 A nest was constructed in the playhouse. It looks soft enough for an egg!
